Occupation: Perfusionist

I.
The job that I will discuss in this presentation is perfusionist. Not a lot of people know about perfusionists, but it is a very important job. Pefusionists must have a high level of education with a special school required for certification. Pefusionists are vital to the surgery process. This a job where an individual will have to work hard but can make a good living. In my talk today I will provide information about the qualifications necessary, skills required, day to day tasks, and finally the salary and demands.

II.
I will begin with the qualifications. Specifically the education and skills required. First, a perfusionist must have a high school diploma. That is not all, though, they must also have a college degree from a university with a certified perfusionary program. Before they can begin work, they must take a written exam administered by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Lastly, it is recommended that they have hospital experience already either via internships or volunteer work. Experienced perfusionists recommend that beginners have a solid knowledge of anatomy, hematology and calculus. Sometimes, medical assistants, nurses, paramedics, or other healthcare workers choose to become perfusionists. These are the people most able to be calm under the intense pressure of a surgery.

III.
Moving on, now I will talk about the common tasks a perfusionist performs. The primary task is to pump the patient’s blood during surgery. Second, many other things have to be done to make the procedure smooth. A good perfusionist comes in to the hospital at 6 a.m., collects all the components of the heart-lung machine, assembles them, and makes sure the equipment works perfectly. In addition to this, the perfusionist has many other tasks to help the surgeon. He or she has to help restart a patient’s heart after cardiac surgery or stabilize an irregular heartbeat using electrical pacemakers or defibrillating devices.

IV.
Perfusionists are able to make a good living. The starting salary right after college is around sixty thousand dollars per year. Let me put it another way, perfusionists make about one thousand, one hundred and fifty-four dollars per week when they begin. While this is good money, after ten years of experience it gets even better. Experienced perfusionists make one hundred thousand dollars per year. The work that they do is not easy; they spend forty hours each week doing their tasks. However, sometimes they need to work on the weekend in addition to the normal workweek. The field is growing with three thousand seven hundred perfusionists and many job opportunities.

V.
In conlusion, perfusionists have a hard but satisfying job. They need to have a high level of education to gain a mastery of their field. Many skills are necessary to succeed. The tasks are difficult but of vital importance to the patients they work with. They make a good salary for all of their labor. Being a perfusionist would be a very good job.
